John C. Warman

John (“Doc”) Warman was a native Washingtonian and local legend. He attended Sacred Heart Academy, Gonzaga College High School, and Georgetown University. After graduation, he taught Greek and Latin at Gonzaga and was eventually appointed Chairman of the Classics Department. However, music was his greatest gift.

As a child prodigy, Doc studied the piano and learned to play by ear, no sheet music necessary. From being the music director at Our Lady of Victory Church to playing the organ at Immaculate Conception Church and St. Mary’s Church, Doc was a musical genius.

At Gonzaga, Doc was a fixture in their remarkable theater productions, as music director, producer, and accompanist. You may recognize his photo in the Gonzaga Theater Hall of Fame; he was the first person inducted in 1999.

In 1986, Georgetown University recognized Doc’s tremendous contributions as a musician and teacher by awarding him a Ph.D., honoris causa. In honor of this achievement, his students started calling him “Doc.”

Doc loved being our teacher, mentor, and friend. Through your donations to the John Warman Scholarship, his legacy will continue for generations to come.
